How To Save The Demo Scene - EP's Answers
Now I will answer to some pouet posters who have commented on STS (the article How To Save The Demo Scene from Hugi 29).
First of all: STS article was the first article I've ever written, so it's not my best article so far.
I wrote it during winter 2003 and did not send it to hugi but to the scene.org staff who then forwarded it to adok.
At this moment I was working for national French education and was surrounded with PCs 35 hours per week + some hours in my
spare time.
The PCs I got to watch demos were not well equipped for 3D and as the old demo philosophy had been about optimization, I
thought this was Ok.
I was totally unaware of the fact demos were now only for people who have money
(a high end PC costs more than 1000 EUR - far more expensive than an A1200 at its
market release date).
At this moment I was working and knew what it meant:
being productive and not spending one's time in an apparently not so useful task such as art.
I love the arts but I mean it's only for people who own enough money or are introduced to them.
French education is all about military indoctrination with respect for the hierarchy being the main topic
and studying useless things just to fill the memory.
For me the scene was a place of refuge like computers were in general:
Allowing me to be alone, away from other people, people like the ones who were really evil with me in my infancy.
Let explain that:
In my first years of life, I spent the holidays with my grand parents. My grand father was a military and
a practising Catholic.
I mean: my infancy was not a joy. It was full of rules to respect:
rigour, strictness, honesty and efficiency.
As my father was not really a genius, I felt that this all was a bad example for me.
Computers and demos were giving me a lot of joy improving my logics, and dreaming instead of making bad things.
Yes, the demo scene saved me from bad habits and bad people.
Until I met bad demos and until the scene was IMHO perverted, see below.
I have also sent STS to other mags, but I've got almost not replies.
Why have I written it?
Well, to save or at least improve the scene, and not to get fuckings from active, skilled sceners.
The main reason was that I had watched a list of bad demos in a row and had been really
hurt by them.
Moreover, demos did not please me anymore apart from let's say 1% of them:
the good ones (those you love too in fact).
I also sent STS to a special guy named Chaos of Farbrausch.
And he replied to me after a short time!
And I think several things:
Dierk is clever and has a huge knowledge about the scene, and he is not as evil as others I met at pouet like
meCh\\bps, PIRACY=CANCER, dipswitch, Igor, Navis, Okkie Hasselhoff, eSKiMOkUNiNGAS!, xeNusion, rainmaker / mfx, aser,
uncle-x/mfx, las, Chock, CheesyTBC,...
Before allowing Adok to publish STS, I thoroughly read the Hugi mags I got and learned about the philosophy of Hugi:
I came to the conclusion that it was a "medium skilled scener level" mag and STS was written for such an audience.
What is a medium skilled scener level?
A level between the typical "lamer" and not so typical "elite" level, in the middle of both extremes.
Let's say Hugi was for me a mag for people who has been "in the scene" for about 2 years.
I've thought that because it was not like the mags I was used to reading in the past.
It was not as focused on coding as the others. There was not too much mathematics as in them.
As demos which hurt myself were supposed to be coded and created by not so elite sceners I allowed Adok
to publish the article.
Of course I was sure some people would react badly to it, but I didn't expect them to react as badly as some actually
did.
But let's stop all this chit-chat. Here are my answers:
Igor:
"what is this guy talking about:
You know, www.demoscene.tv has already done the conversion to animations
and it's available by streaming worldwide!!!
I'm a fool so wait some years and we will talk again about my article if you want...
Some demos (a lot of them in fact) are yet available in anim format so that as many people as possible can enjoy them:
share them with everybody instead of restraining the prods to expensive PCs.
Dipswitch:
"a) "how to save the demoscene" by ep:
Of course the scene is about realtime but nowadays prods are different.
I mean they do not push the hardware to the limits as it's impossible to talk directly with the hardware:
we use DirectX or OpenGL, and we use drivers to make something. We are no
more limited like before and hardware isn't standard: I mean "hardware harmony"
was no more there and that sucks IMHO.
Or perhaps you make a 4K using a000:0000 and int 13h calls?
Size limitations have a meaning when they are real, nowadays they aren't: drivers, DirectX, OpenGL dll are already on disk.
I didn't say that nowadays demos were lame, they are different, too mathematical and so abstract
IMHO.
Yes, it's still really interesting to get so good demos in 4K (see taat prods) or in 64K (the product, poem for a horse,...),
but they aren't really sized what the exe properties suggest.
Even the last 4K I have watched uses midi for sound, i.e. another driver (drivers are code not included inside the exe).
"the ranting about animation instead of realtime effect execution is absolute blasphemy and inacceptable.
Well, for sure technology is used, but not to the maximum like it was before.
See my other articles to discover why and see evidence that backs up my opinion.
I'm fond of storage stuff so...
But well, yes, realtime is something essential to the scene.
However, compatibility with all kinds of hardware was my main idea behind animations.
A lot of coders and groups certainly share my thoughts on this point, like TBL, for example.
Yes, currently anim conversions sucks, or are too big. That's a pity.
But some are well done and give "a good idea" of the demo.
I never thought .exe must die.
Anim for people unable to see demos due to hardware limitations, that's
the anim idea.
It's a pity, too, not be able to watch an old demo on a new computer
without a lot of knowledge like installing vdmsound,
patching pascal generated exe with tools to fix the speed problem,
using another program to slow down your fast computer,
installing vesa drivers,...
That's too long and we have no time to spend in the fast paced world of today.
Well, an animation is easier to watch than to take one hour for finding the right way to make old demos run.
Current demos will be old soon, believe it, so the problem will appear tomorrow with nowadays top demos, too.
And when it comes to getting something to run on another computer than those for which it was made, it's in certain cases not possible.
Open your mind, guy, try to imagine "the product" on your cellular phone.
Don't do an anim and ask Farbrausch to do the conversion.
Wait a century.
Cross your fingers and stop dreaming as this will be not possible due to time they don't have to do this.
An animation is the solution in this case.
you don't need demos on your cellular phone?
Me neither! :)
This is the future anyway...
But yes, realtime animations (demos) are what makes them alive, virtual, having an artificial life, mechanical, software life.
Yes, that's important.
But the industry sadly has other plan than getting full compatability over the whole range of hardware available on the market:
The more different it is, the more problems arise and the more services or pieces of hardware, or piece of software they will sell!!!
Fucking capitalism, responsible for all the problems in this world, but this system is like any others: it will have an end.
An emulator needs a lot of CPU power to run emulated software and so it requires very much hardware horse power.
And an emulated demo isn't the same as the original working on the real computer it was built for:
emulation loses something as optimized code isn't necessary any longer
and you watch something which isn't running as it ran on the original computer.
Emulation is hard to be done: nowadays screens aren't 50Hz any more and the default / best screen resolutions aren't the same as used in the past
You get interpolated, out of the sync demos, running a bit differently than they were, even the pixel pitch is different.
Well, emulation isn't perfect nor will it be: nowadays hardware is different, not only superior
than the older one.
"the next chapter, "remove black & white...", does not need to be commented on and just shows the narrowness of EP's aesthetic horizon.
What a futurist view, yeah!!!
Hey DP, we will go walking together at Chernobyl,
you will be happy near rusty pipes and with me dressed as a cosmonaut to protect myself from the radioactivity taking your hand.
We will make a handsome couple.
You will enjoy the artistical view of the beautiful firms which have burnt years ago,
I'm sure you will see how fun it is to watch a demo with such a scenery:
Looks like what the modern SF American movies show us all the time:
The future will be pollution, the future will be robots everywhere, the future will be chaos, the future will be hard life to survive,...
I'm against such a future: it's good for the money of big societies, but not for my health, and neither for my moral...
I hate this view of future life as it's as negative as possible. Fumes are cancer generators, factories with rusty pipes
aren't ecological,
the nature will be totally destroyed,...
Totalitarians and big societies want to get power and money by any way, they use brute force and in fact they are mad,
remember that.
An example of a totalitarian chief was Hitler.
He was the chief of the "superior men" (Aryans):
tall men with blue eyes and blonde hair, but Adolf himself had brown hair and brown eyes and was small...
He was not realistic at all, and he was also a really ill minded guy as such an horrible war was not worth the cost neither in money nor in lives.
No war is worth the life of a human being.
These men have totally left one part of the whole thing, or the reality, they are blind, deaf, stupid,
and everything which comes along with such weaknesses.
Hitler or Stalin or Saddam Hussein or G.Bush or J.Chirac were all wrong.
But they were under the order or the pressure of rich guys
(Hitler didn't kill 5 million people alone, he used weapons built by the industry and he also had a lots of allies,
meaning a lot of mad guys - and in fact people who are not at all human oriented rule the world).
Logical and circular thinking lead to paradox and to weaponry.
Following rules like absolute truth leads to extremism and that's bad.
Common sense, respect of others, accepting their being different is better than any rules.
Masses aren't binary logic minded but instead love well-being minded: they are wise, nothing else really matters than well being.
We don't know were we go, why we are here but we survive and we love
being in good shape to do so: life is great when you are healthy, the
contrary isn't true but if you're masochist...
THE FACT IS: DEMOS HAVE A BLACK BACKGROUND AND SOMES FEATURE EVEN MORE THAN THAT:
I haven't quoted these demos in STS as I didn't want to hurt their makers.
Sadly a lot of sceners hence understood my article as a generally bad judgement of the scene.
(DP'S REACTION: "ABSOLUTE BLASPHEMY, KASPAROV THE DEMO WHICH SAVE THE SCENE YEARS AGO",
Yes, when I came home after 10 hours of working using a computer,
when I started watching these demos and saw all this shit in one row,
I said to myself:
"But what has happened to sceners?
Why is there so much hate?"
I was really hurt and thought really: the scene is dying, I need to do
something to save it.
I ask their makers to think a lot about such lame prods and explain us why they did so.
When we have an explanation, thinks change in our minds:
Scientists in the last century were ripping dead guys.
This was seen as a total illegal behaviour.
But they did so to understand how our bodies worked and this led to a better medicine.
Demomakers have done these demos for one reason: which one?
Please explain, then I hope, I will be healed.
Why do some sceners create such a big SHIT (IMHO)? They are evil, featuring weapons and blood.
All this isn't good IMHO and if one day your children will see such things, they will be like me: they will be
hurt and upset.
Yes, I'm against such bad stuff as when I click on a demo icon, I don't know what will appear on screen.
I suggest to people who don't have enough imagination to coin anything else than a demo with such a style: You should find friends and talk.
Or even talk with a psychologist and have him open your eyes. Look everywhere on the web,
try to type a word in google and look at pictures which come with it.
They will see generally a huge number of things that are not any war related because war isn't what most people want for the present nor for the future.
You will see porn pics for example proving that people are concerned
with sex as sex is life and sex is pleasure. We want pleasure when we watch
a demo.
I'm in love with nature, my and your mother.
Nature is for human being what a tree branch is for a bird:
it's what we live on. No bird will get the idea to cut the tree branch where its nest is built on, but human beings do!!!
And most of the time, they don't even understand or aren't aware of this!!!
Wake up human beings, wake up now and change our world before it will be too late.
How?
For example, use your cars less and less and use bikes instead, this will improve both air quality and your health.
Thus you will have clearer ideas and this will improve your life too, so why don't you do it now?
No time? Compute the real time your car takes you: time to fill your full
tank, time to park your car, time to open the garage, close it,... Car
is costing money, too much money. Car is a way used by the government to
gain so much money: watch TV clips and you will see propaganda music video
clips showing top model girls with big cars around, and they are there to
push guys buying a car to let governements earning lots of money from
cars (there are tons of taxes on gasoline and cars).
Stop eating shit as there is so much waste which come with.
Mc Donald's stuff comes along with so much packaging lost in the trashcan, a total loss of natural ressource stuff.
Change your individualist and egoistic logics guys, be clever, be nice to others and yourself, change now to change our future.
If you have never been outside the walls of a big city, you have simply missed something in life, you have never experienced freedom.
Finally I hate all these bad demos for the information they transmit.
There are conditioning people to be sheep and to agree with such a future.
Demos can be as technical as possible, as stunning as possible without conveying such a bad message.
If their coder's universe is made of such a shit, then please guy, open your eyes, watch other things and please don't think:
"This guy reduces my freedom."
I swear on the head of my mother that my aim is to show you reality can be different than this pessimist future view
imposed by the media.
Do some sports and you will see things differently, you will find that health is the best present in your life and must be kept
good for a lasting life.
"and in this context, the next chapter "we have to be realist" doesnt need any further comment, since this perfectly matches the phrases of the birth of socialistic realism in 1932.
I don't make politics as all kinds of government from right to left and of all mixes have never made things as they would have to do.
It's easy, I'm 29 years old and I have never experienced a year without strikes in the streets in France meaning people aren't happy.
Politics is a way to blow hot and cold to be ok with everybody:
managing a whole country while pleasing everybody is impossible to do.
The guys at government are irresponsible:
lots of dead guys in summer of 2003 inside hospitals,
one million guys infected by blood transfusion have became haemophilic in 1982,...
The main aim of politics is to animate the population so that the population doesn't see what the politicians do:
Here in France for instance politics is only money oriented.
It's all about reducing expenses and to make state funds and tills as filled as possible: but what's the use of a filled till?
There's none!!!
A filled till is of no use, money is not an aim, it's a way and it's a way to improve life - not the best way I must say.
Big cars, a girl with big tits aren't ways to improve your life:
it's a dream, a dream put inside your head since you were child by TV, cinema, and the media.
Wake up: Barbie with her living norms can't be real, her measurements are impossible to reach for a real girl: 39-23-33.
Living norms?
I don't think I impose mine.
I simply reject those established by the economic system
which pushes people to be as competitive as possible and so they must gain time by any means like eating faster and faster.
Dipswitch, do you consider yourself an anarchist?
And you drink Coca Cola, the most advertised product in the world without no doubt, and eat Mc Donald's foods?
I think you are conditioned by TV, radio, cinema, press ads and correct myself if there is no advertisement for such
firms in these media!!!
Recently Patrick Lelay who is Chairman of TF1, the first and most watched french TV channel, said:
"Ce que nous vendons à Coca-Cola, c'est du temps de cerveau humain disponible", which can be translated as:
What we sell to Coca-Cola, is a human brain's spare time.
Being anarchist is not to follow what is established by the law, by the tradition, by the state, by the firms,
when it's imposed AND is bad...
So you eat something which increases the sugar ratio in blood more than necessary and which will make you tired some time after...
Do you really know what coca and fastfood do to your health?
Drinking a 33cl bottle of coca is like drinking 5 cups of coffee so don't be surprise if after that people
who drink one are so impossible to canalize.
Have you seen the average american body?
Take a look on the web, get info, you will see the living norms applied inside the most powerful nation in the world.
I'm not G.Bush, I have no money in any food business nor cars, nor anything else as money doesn't interest me.
I'm interested in my health and I advise you to get info about health businesses in the world.
You will be amazed at the fact that the food business is more than huge.
You will also see that pharmaceutical companies are a mafia, see www.lalkar.org.
What does medicine have to do with food ?
Bad food makes you becomes sick and once in this state you will need
medicine, so they are linked.
Continue displaying so much intelligent behavior (sceners eating bad fast food
and drinking bad alcohol), guys, and you will soon see what will happen...
You will be in bad health conditions, will get cancer,...
This isn't a threat, sadly this is reality.
You've been warned and this warning is based on experience.
Living norms?
Well go to your nearest shop and find out what living norms are:
food which makes you hungry and makes you as round as a barrel.
Switch on TV and watch all these cars everywhere, all these computers, all
these guys in black jackets, that's living norms.
See all the mass media fashion around, that's living norms too.
STS not!
I've never imposed anything and "animations or die" IS NOT SAYING
"kill .exe". Changing the sceners DOESN'T MEAN "now you are under EP
orders".
Dipswitch, I admit my way of communicating in STS was really special and
could be misunderstood. But some people have understood what I really want to say:
improve the scene, stay opened and listen to each other. Do not hide
your work inside a black box: this hides your demo jewels display,...
I have written STS as a friend, not as an enemy, believe it.
And so STS had the aim to "save" you from not so wise behaviour.
"to close this in EP's own pathetic way of formulating end-theses:
What is bad, is people who consider only the form
Sorry for my own way of suggesting. I used the imperative but my words weren't supposed to be orders.
They were suggestions and strong pieces of advice.
Artists of course have to be free to do art, else it's not art.
But actors, singers, and a lot of other artists including painters usually follow "instructions" from a director.
They don't fuck him or insult him: they have to live and they like to know what to do.
What I mean is that both idea coiners, scenarists and other guys
who write "instructions" for performers aren't tyrants because they do that.
There are in fact several types of artists: there are self-taught ones and there are practitioners, some are both.
My article wasn't written to lay down the scene to my point of view.
The fact is: if everybody says "everything goes right, everything is perfect, change nothing" then how can art and the scene evolve?
And you know what?
I love diversity so it's good that everybody in the scene does whatever he wants.
But if they can avoid hurting, boring, brain washing viewers then this can be better, isn't it?
The fact is also that what hurts me might please others, and vice versa, so how to please everybody?
Well it's impossible, but as demos aren't classified like TV broadcasts are (programs for adults only are signed
using a logo, meaning "erotic", "not for under 13",...), some can hurt sensitive souls, so please put a note in the
readme.txt accompanying your prods if you think "this can hurt" and why not add a little logo showing this in a corner
of the screen.
"Demo labelisation!!! EP attempt of scene uniformisation!" (Dipswitch):
Well, wake up, in the scene there are fashions too and so there is
uniformisation. EP has nothing to do with that: the lack of aim and
imagination of some coders / graphicians / musicians leads us to "eating" the
same effects 150 times per year. So don't say I'm trying to make anything
in the scene uniform: it is IMHO already too uniform!
STS was a plea for the return of diversity to the scene.
"c) "certified demo coder" by prodigy sandy (who?)
You should contact prodigy sandy and he will tell you, I have written him to explain him democoders
aren't a new way of selling oneself in the software industry, so you were wrong here too.
And you know what he did when he learnt I wasn't happy and he saw my arguments were good?
He simply said: you are probably right.
And to finish on this point, if a scener wants to make himself more "marketable", he should contact the video game industry
or if he is a musician or a graphician, contact web or multimedia industry and show them what he has done and ask for a job.
This is as easy as this, no need to get a degree.
In fact if you are really good at demo coding, why not build your own game by yourself and try to sell it as shareware?
Hard if you try to compete with big societies like those who made murder training:
see www.idsoftware.com and this:
www.mfa.gov.il,
www.sciencenewsforkids.org
Please also notice something you surely haven't a clue of:
me and prodigy are computer professionals:
he is working for a firm and I mend computers and do network activities at secondary schools with 2700 pupils
and 300 teachers.
Both of us have a lot of work to do every day and when we can ease the pain, or get more money, we try to.
This is not at all the same thing as being a scener:
a scener is a computer enthusiast,
he has passion for what he does,
he spends time and doesn't care about how much time it will take him to release something,
meaning he doesn't work for money,
not for surviving,
he creates
because he can express himself and finds that fun,
really fun - this is a leisure activity.
The fact is also that professionals don't have the same freedom as sceners have,
pros aren't as accurate and good as sceners can be.
Pros don't have time to study and experiment with all the details of a new technology:
when you install or sell a program which will be used by thousands of users,
you don't have the same constraints as when you release a demo for 2000 sceners aware of all the details of their computers.
Most of the time in the professional field we trade and work with so called "total lamers".
This is a different situation, and we must act differently.
In the pro field we have to respect as many people as possible,
whereas in the scene everything is more fun oriented and consequences are less important.
So tyranian DipSwitch, I let you write in total freedom your Pain's
articles using caricatures like leechers and lamers: they prove your
audience doesn't have the subtleties of my brain and doesn't have my
experience... Go on sceners' general Dipswitch and continue talking about
me so much: free advertisement everywhere. Thank you for such an
audience: hugi 29 was the second most popular diskmag at pouet just after the charts!!!
EXCELLENT FOR A TOTAL LAMER ISN'T IT? I see the truth now: you're
jealous!
"d) "piracy" by ep:
I saw there, you criticize a lot but I have never seen an article nor a demo or a gfx or a sound by you. So,
please instead of flooding the post,
please take notepad and make an article,
I will then criticize it, we will see what the result will be.
Back to P2P: P2P has been used in 2003 to download 83 million movies.
Download emule and watch the number of files shared and you will discover that more than a billion of files are shared.
Not more than 5% are non copyrighted stuff..
So P2P is a part of piracy.
An important part..
"all in all, with this issue, hugi turns out not only to be totally irrelevant, but also to carry all sort of dubious "opinions" by mostly people the scene never heard of.
All in all, you have done nothing to improve hugi, you have not shown any proof nor arguments and you now have several writers
who can say: "This dipswitch, if we could put it off, that would be more than Ok."
Being a main editor of Pain also plays in your disfavour when it comes to
objectivity!!!
I have learnt you're studying history and this shows in this post: yes you have a lot of memory, you have a lot of stories about the
past to talk with us but apart from all these stories from the past (let's say, useless as not part of the present...),
what do you have to teach us?
You seem to be a type of personality well known by students: a pretentious teacher who teaches us everything.
Let me express it clearly, I hate school, I have lost a lot of time there and almost everything we have learned at it is
totally useless.
In fact for me school has a aim: fill students' memory with shit and especially with so many useless details
we can't work with.
School is a part of the politicians' plan to eradicate spirit: put students for years, in sitting position under the order
of so balls breaking teachers.
I advise you to listen to "The wall" by Pink Floyd and hear what they teach us about teachers ("we no need no education").
Yes, school is a way of stopping us from acting, and in fact it is a a lot of time waste.
Ha yeah, I have forgotten the most important thing: when I talk about teachers, what is interesting is that they appreciate
our homeworks and tests but AFAIK they don't participate in tests, meaning they aren't able to appreciate us as they aren't
in the conditions we are...
And teachers are so lame and out of the reality: they have never been to firms, and they have never worked outside schools,
well at least most of them.
They aren't in the economy market in which all of us are working and in fact they are outside reality, teaching obsolete
knowledge at least at secondary school.
In fact we all learn what we need for work at work / home and most of the time, this is autodidact, at least
in computer / network science.
Of course higher education is not as lame as secondary school but I see secondary school as a filter and for me it was
a total waste of time.
All in all, DP, you seem to be like your pseudo: a piece of electronic hardware which is useless today as with jumperless
technology we have hopefully eradicated the dipswitches, so please improve your brain (your own firmware) and stop teaching
us nothing interesting.
I make you responsible for most of all the posts which have come after yours and have been so negative about STS.
What I have personally learnt at school from history courses is: what time is, how to order facts in time using a simple
line, what was bad in my ancestors' life in order not to do the same mistakes again, how to build statistical data
using histograms, age pyramids (showing that parts of Europe will soon become the future third world as the population
becomes older and older - especially in France).
History answers simple questions: When, Who did What, How and Why.
This shows most of the time people fight to get more power over others and finally exploit them.
The rest was forgotten.
I've also learnt a bit late that you're a writer for PAIN.
And that you fight for supremacy of scene information.
Information is power: that's you're main idea, get the scene under your
wings and saying everybody "what I think is good, fear others' thoughts,
they are betrayal, excommunicate them". You are the pope of the scene
information.
What a coincidence my dear, the most virulent pouet poster about STS who talks about trolls and EP's views in PAIN 1204
is the one who launches the pouet troll for STS and writes for the main "rival" of Hugi! And what a coincidence, he was
also an organizer of parties of the kind I criticize for being stressful (big ones).
Learn more about my arguments to see if the scene is dead in another article, Mr elite.
Being so blind to obvious "details" makes you ridiculous and makes me find a good rival for the first place
of the big mouth of the year 2005.
Sir DP, I've seen one thing interesting which proves you are a good organizer (This is irony of course): you caress demo
makers from one hand and with the one hand, you caress on the last lines of your article "the foundation" the Warez scene.
As you should know Warez is about piracy, about making games sales lower and so hurting the demo sceners involved in
game making: they need to eat at the end of the month and if sales are bad, guess what?
With such a slap in the foundations, we see how good you are at organizing, you are a good politician, telling whoever
you meet what they want to hear - what a strength of nature, what a strength of opinion!!!
So before saying I'm bad for the scene, simply change your attitude: mine was to show piracy is huge, some big societies
make a lot of money from artists and politicians hit pirates and illegal users to protect the interest of their friends,
the bosses.
Moreover, I support coders, help them improve their products, and yes, I also write to demo coders and I think they
love that.
"e) "scene national anthems" by adok:
Adok: "The text was composed by August Heinrich Hoffmann von Fallersleben (1798 - 1874) in the year 1841.
The music is from Joseph Haydn (1732 - 1809).
The anthem consists of three verses.
At official celebrations usually only the music is played, without singing; and if there is singing, then people sing only the third verse.
The Nazi anthem which you are talking about all the time was the so-called 'Horst-Wessel-Lied'.
During the rule of the Nazis, this song was played right after the German national anthem.
You being a student of history ought to know this."
EP:
As we can see here, some future "teachers" are bad students!!!
Yeah, dear Dipswitch, you are a "teacher": you will write history books and
so will define in our memories what our past was. So you master
information system here too...
They have learnt something at school, and they believe they have learnt something which was the absolute truth.
They just tell us what they have heard and learnt by heart: dipswitch's classes will be a total waste of time for his students.
And he will reward those who will just learn and write at tests what he will put inside their memory:
a memory with tons of mistakes and false facts...
The fact about Europe is that it contains a nation which was involved and responsible for 2 world wars in less than 50 years.
That's a real traumatism and so we ask us questions, that's normal.
People like myself think: these guys have killed so many people - should I trust them now?
There are fears which still exist about them.
So if you don't talk, if you don't explain, we stay in frightened state.
And so teachers want us to teach us something?
In a relative reality, they want to teach us facts and stories that were static.
Stories which came from the past where nobody can exactly tell what really happened.
School teaches us the story of big nations like USA and USSR, which proves one thing: this scholar system is based on a power hierarchy.
The USA rules the world and even infects our school courses.
Logics and common sense would have been to teach us something about ourselves and our neighbours:
I know nothing about the English, the German, and Eastern countries which are part of Europe.
Once more DipSwitch, stop talking, and please ask yourself what you said.
It has taken me so much time to write STS and all my other articles and you criticize without any constructivism.
You have the right to say, "this is a big shit", but you have to justify it with arguments and proofs.
Because when I have written my articles, I have taken the time to find here and there proofs and arguments, and you see there, some of them.
"not with socialist realism itself, but with totalitarian thinking in general.
it's not a coincidence that the cultivation of poppy and cannabis indica was prohibited in the ussr only in the 1930s.
and it's no coincidence that forced sports and a glorification of absolute health is/was to be found in many totalitarian societies.
perhaps EP regards not drinking alcohol and eating no "bad" food an important part of his lifestyle, i do aswell when it comes to food, but when he or i would start to force our points on others, then it's nothing else than bad."
AFAIK nobody has proved that cannabis is absolutely bad for health in all cases.
The fact is that if you consume too much it's bad for your health, but if you just consume a little, it can be great.
Cannabis can be used for people who have a lots of pains as it relieves them.
But as always governements aren't qualified, and here in France Cannabis is forbidden by the law.
But this isn't the case everywhere in Europe.
This is another example which shows that Europe isn't as united as it must be to compete with the rest of the world.
Or even and more important enough, structured to be efficient in its own relationships...
I'm not against cannabis.
But I disklike more generally drugs, both legal ones like alcohol and tobacco
and forbidden ones like cocaine or any others, as they made us dependent and that's bad.
Computers can be also a drug and so I try to and succeed in stopping to be in front of the screen all my life long.
I try to have a more varied life:
doing several sports, reading different types of scientific articles and books, computers, health...
I always hate doing the same stuff, this kills the mind.
Like TV and alcohol do, too.
Where I have forced you to do sports?
I have strongly advised you to do some.
But I have never been behind you saying: "Now do sports or I will kill you!!!"
A text is a text.
Only in Judeo-Christian traditions it is considered the truth.
This is another big mistake of these religions in a world where evolution is constant.
In fact if I advise you to be in good shape, there is a reason for this:
when you meet people who are in bad health then you are more likely to become ill yourself.
This is how epidemics and a lot of other diseases work, no?
Moreover, a guy who is using alcohol too often is a danger and a bad example for others, especially for children, no?
Yes, I reduce Ur freedom.
You are right on one point but I'm right on another so what to do to decide between the two of us?
I have for now used the imperative to push you a bit to be in better health but I will not do it again.
I will not visit parties anymore as I find them very tiring and not as hygienic as I need to.
My health is the most important thing in my life.
But yes, others can have their life too.
Some love being ill, some are masochist or they love that state too, so I will not meet them, that's my choice.
Last thing: don't make an hostchpotch of ideas:
trying to "improve" sceners' health can't be seen as a part of a totalitarian strategy
Totalitarians are totally against art in general and are also against thinkers, intelligence and all kind of intellectual or spiritual movements.
I love scene demos but I would like to see them improved in a way that there is more spirit in them:
I mean demos with more cohesion in what we see on screen.
Seeing effects one after another without a link and without a message is simply at least for me something which blends my ideas and I hate that.
I love to understand, I love stories, I love scenarios and I would like you to improve demos this way.
But I understand now one thing: you have at least for some of you, a
technical / artistic spirit, while I have a rational / professional / technical / efficiency oriented spirit. So we bring into conflict as these spirits
are non compatible. But I enjoy this difference and yes, sir Dipswitch, I
love your arrogant style, and I have applied your spirit to you by my
website. And yes, you've understood that I'm not a guy who loves being
tread on my toes.
Yes I WOULD LIKE YOU TO IMPROVE, I don't force you, a text doesn't force you, but it can direct you to, it can encourage you to,...
There is a difference between forcing somebody to do something and motivating him to do.
you will see that this kind of demo can really improve the groups' cohesion:
A demo with well defined aims and transitions instead of some parts stuck together with some music in the background
which has nothing to do with the effects on screen can really improve demomaking.
An example: Interference by sanity 1/3 GFX, 1/3 Code, 1/3 Music, texts, effect presentations, address of makers, 100% magic.
This is no more a demo?
Yes, this is: this was the way they were on the Amiga 500, and this was good, why change that?
For sure it's harder to get something this way, this is why it's of better quality (at least for me, everything is relative and subjective).
"have you ever read any scientific text that says "in my opinion" all three sentences?
Ha! I see!!!
DP has the right to make ellipsis but EP the totalitarian doesn't!!!
Be objective, if you use some linguistic technique to communicate your ideas then I can do the same!!!
Using the imperative is also one way to reduce the size of the text.
You surely see like me advertisements everywhere and there is the imperative in them, and why?
Because it's the shortest way, because it's faster to read, because it's on the move, because they want to sell by any means.
And there are no people on the streets saying: "Bah! This ad, with so many orders, fuck them."
Orders are used in demos too: "Fasten your seatbelt", "put the sound louder"
, "guys stop smoking and watch",... and many others sentences are here
and there in demos.
It's known that certain people use the imperative all the time, your mum has surely told you once: "DP, close the window".
Yes, I admit it's orders and it's annoying, but there are different types of orders: really imperative ones and others.
My "orders" belong to the second type, those which you can, not follow!
Another example of orders which aren't real?
You know what Dance music is?
"Wake up, clap your hands,...", all these are orders but do you follow them?
No, and do you say to the DJ: "Fuck you, stop giving me orders!"
But perhaps to reduce text I can also write in Chinese as this is the shortest language.
But sadly I don't know Chinese and you surely don't know it either so...
"to admire it.
Ho DP, what a big mouth!!!
Hey I give ideas, I wrote scenarios, either you love them or you don't, but please don't say I impose them on you!!!
You are so wrong this time!
And yes, there's something fun and something that isn't:
Bill Gates getting a cake in the head, makes everybody smile except him of course!
Seeing nuclear bomb clouds doesn't!
Well at least for me and sensible souls.
And how about you?
But demomakers are free and I don't want to impose anything on them.
Perhaps at least they can put in the readme accompanying their demo a word to say "contains scenes which can hurt sensitive souls".
I've seen you are a party organizer, and I really hope my point of view about parties is wrong and will become more and more wrong.
Perhaps you can invite myself to a future party (and paying the return plane
ticket)?
But I admit that now parties fear me: seeing people drunken around me,
in front of screens, while watching military rendered games with blood
and darkness everywhere doesn't attract me so much... This is the picture I
have of parties in my mind as a lot of mags and comments about alcohol
here and there show me that. I don't love this picture as for me parties
were something really different before. And I consider sceners
enough intelligent not to follow the "average" folk that is drowning one's
sorrow.
I've also seen you are an ASCII art scener.
So why not making some beautiful logos for hugi which we will put inside readme's to improve hugi's popularity?
Ha, you write for Pain?
I see, you were really objective and tolerant with me as everybody can see!!!
I will write some articles for pain too, but perhaps this was your plan!!!
You hit Adok / Hugi writers and you get them in your team.
What a good strategy.
I will write my point of view about you in an article for pain, we will see if it will be published or not.
This is something useful to do, and if you aren't happy with articles - well, write better articles yourself.
Being one of the major hugi writers for issue 29 wasn't great at all for everybody:
seeing mostly only my articles was not good for objectivity.
Last word: There are always 2 points of view as DCS demos said, you Know?
'Save the scene' article:
"Release demos as animations" (all that with capital letters).
Because then Amiga users will be able to see them.
This is by far the biggest pile of wank ever published.
On any media.
Ever.
"Animations or Die "!
Haha... fool."
inacceptable theses by someone who seemingly misunderstood what the scene is about and doesn't care for the preservation of a specific demoscene character.
he wants to convert the unique demoscene in just one of many multimedia-creative communities, just to "go in time" with the general developement.
For example, size limitations are for him an artifact of the past, not going in hand with the possibilities of nowadays storage hardware.
but there's a big anachronism in there!
what has the 4kb size limit to do with storage hardware development?
I dont know any storage device on ANY machine that could handle only 4kb, so the whole size-related ranting is pointless."
And doing so you will get something with slowdowns under Windows.
demos ARE about realtime code execution, and also, concerning EP's outreach pleas, the realtime aspect of democoding is one of the main promotion aspects of outreach organisations like our digitale kultur e.V. besides that animation-only would break with traditions, the realtime aspect is getting far more people interested in demoscene than animations would do.
As someone being involved in the outreach work of digitale kultur e.v.i can totally contradict his thesis about "(the technology) is totally ignored", cause this is simply not the case."
i read quite a lot on aesthetics of totalitarian societies in the last months (works by paperny, groys and other culture-philosophers and historicians), and EP's views in this chapter are very much reminding me on these...
"socialistic realism" in the ussr from 1932 on also required from all artforms to bring on "cheerful", "lively" and so on motives.
"seeing a firm, a factory with rusty pipes, fumes, cars or geometric stuff isn't fun at all" perfectly resembles the views of stalinist aesthetics towards futurism, constructivism and other avant-garde artistic movements.
with theses like these, EP positions himself on the side of political reaction and cuts himself off from the avant-gardistic developement of the past 120 years.
there's no way to save a progressive movement like the demoscene using the aesthetics of reactionary movements like soc-realism.
(by the way, EP's other article "philosophy of and[?] ideas..." carries the same spirit. the slogan "we need more life on screen" was exactly what killed the 20s avant-garde cinema in the ussr, giving birth to aesthetically dead " realistic" pictures)."

http://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=13165
THESE DEMOS AND KASPAROV WERE THE MAIN REASONS WHY I WROTE STS.
EP'S REACTION ON THAT: YES, KASPAROV IS GOOD WHEN IT COMES TO THE CODE,
BUT THE AESTHETIC ASPECT OF IT, ALLOW ME TO SAY IT, IS ABSOLUTELY HURTING
ACCORDING TO MY POINT OF REFERENCE IN ART).
the "we must change sceners" fits perfectly in that context too -
it's a try to establish behavement and living norms,
a position that the demoscene as an anarchically-rooted community just has to reject.
if someone drinks alcohol or eats fastfood is the individual's own business, it has NOTHING to do with the scene."
I'm not an alien and I'm not here to kill you.
I have written STS for friendship with the scene community which has given me so much good time in the past.
EMMANUEL POIRTIER (please don't mispell my name: poirier and nothing else) IS BAD FOR THE SCENE HE WANTS TO REDUCE THE CREATIVITY OF THE SCENE TO ONE AESTHETIC AND ONE TECHNICALL APPROACH HE REPRESENTS AESTHETICAL STAGNATION AND AT THE SAME TIME THE UPROOTING OF SCENE TRADITIONS SHAME ON HUGI FOR GRANTING HIS IDEAS A FORUM"
&emp;
not the DEEP DOWN OF AN ARTICLE.
another pitiful attempt towards institutionalisation of the scene movement.
goes hand in hand with EP's totalitarian-esque views on aesthetics.
if this article would be in the "humour" category, it would be okay, but this seem to be serious.
scary..."
an attempt on analyzing a deep phenomena, even not as bad on certain spots.
But considering p2p as the root of modern piracy makes ep even more stupid than GVU,
RIAA and other copyright-enforcing organisations."
what is this, an attempt to keeping a dead project alive by pumping all sorts of controversial and dubios theories in it?
adok, you alsways pretend to be so political conscious - now draw the political parallels on what you've collected and created! with this ussue, hugi proves its "lameness" once and for all.
but to comfort you, adok, the music in this issue was mostly okay, and the articles by diamondie and optimus (and perhaps some tutorials, i did not check them) were at least something nice to read.
but that's all positive i can say on such a coglomeration of confusion, reaction and pure lameness."
okay, now for some attempt on humour.
apart from the aspect i don't see any slightly spark of fun and originality in the idea of paraphrasing state anthems (collecting typical songs sceners sing on demoparties would be a far more interesting approach), i have one plea to adok: if you are dealing with some matter, make sure you have knowledge about it! this article shows that our oh-so-intellectual-superstudent adok don't really have a clue what he's writing about.
first of all, if you took "functioning" anthems for all the countries, why did you take the german nazi anthem for paraphrasation?
a subtile hint on all germans still being nazis?
or just a show-off of your cluelesness?
yes, i know that that part of the anthem was created before 1848 and stood in a totally different political context originally, but, all ideological ballast aside, this is NOT the current german anthem."
But hey, if you put me in danger by your behaviour
then you thus reduce my freedom so what to do?
I have chosen what I consider the better solution for both of us.
Without it, I can't do anything else.
So I will protect it from others' "bad" habits.
i don't need to write that, it should be clear anyway that this is my opinion,
which i regard for reasonable, but which is no golden rule."
neither is open society when clueless freaks like EP try to force his questionable standarts upon people, going as far as suggesting ready motives for demos, claiming that certain things are generally "fun to watch" and certain things are not.
if you dont understand the reactionary nature of EP's article series i'm quite willing to explain it to you at buenzli (if i wont be too drunk :)."
